God’s Plumb Line: A Tool for Discerning the Will of God.
This book was first published in 2021 under the title of God’s Plumb Line: Aligning Our Hearts with the Heart of God.
This revised edition contains three new chapters in addition to a significant rewrite of the original chapters. The most significant revision is the introduction of the theme “discerning the will of God.”
The intent of the original book was to teach us to think theologically so that our hearts align with the heart of God, our minds with the mind of Christ, and our lives with the ways of God. Thinking theologically refers to thinking that is shaped by the character of God and the ways of God under the guidance of the Spirit. The apostle Paul called such thinking “the renewing of the mind” (Romans 12:2) and the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16).
In Romans 12:2, the apostle Paul tied the ability to discern the will of God with the renewing of the mind. As our thinking begins to be shaped by the character of God and the ways of God under the guidance of the Spirit, we move beyond the way the world trained us to think. This change in how we think positions us to discern the will of God.
Discerning the will of God is the thrust of this revised edition. Alongside that thrust is the focus of the original book—learning to think theologically (i.e., with the mind of Christ). God’s plumb line is a tool for thinking theologically and therefore for discerning the will of God.
The book is designed for small group study. Each chapter includes questions for reflection and discussion.
